Can Off Centered Porcelain Veneers be Fixed?

I’ve gotten porcelain veneers. After he bonded them on he let me look at them. I liked how they looked. They were definitely better than my natural teeth, but they looked off center to me. My dentist told me it was just the angle I was sitting and they’re perfectly aligned. Now that I’ve had them for a week, I’m positive they’re off center. I think he just told me that because they were already bonded on. Is there anything that can be done about it? It’s bugging me.

Dear Lloyd,

Naturally, our teeth are supposed to be centered with our midline. But, nature doesn’t always cooperate. Sometimes we’re born with them off-centered, sometimes crowding causes it, and other times our teeth just shift. If you look at the images of Tom Cruise above, you’ll notice his porcelain veneers are off-centered as well. It’s a little distracting. You’d think someone who can afford the best cosmetic dentist wouldn’t face this issue.

This can be fixed, but likely not from the dentist you have. He doesn’t understand cosmetic dentistry. You may wonder how I know that without even hearing who your dentist is. I can give you two reasons right off the bat.

1. When you expressed concern as to how they looked, he argued by making up a reason you were mistaken. Most dentists who are experienced in cosmetic dentistry understand the most important factor is that the patient is pleased with the aesthetics of the result. After all, that is the whole reason for the procedure.

2. He bonded them on without giving you a chance to give your approval. This is not okay. In fact, many cosmetic dentists have a beautiful smile guarantee. As a part of accomplishing that, they use a temporary try-in paste to give their patients a chance to see what the veneers will look like when bonded. If they’re not satisfied, it’s back to the drawing board.

Your best option at this point is to go to a different cosmetic dentist and get a second opinion about your options. It’s possible you can get a refund too because they weren’t properly placed.
